The 2nd QianTi Performance Art Festival

The inauguration of the 1st QianTi Performance Art Festival was characterised as more of an informal art gathering or event.  However, a seemingly spontaneous peak of interest in the event lead to a swell in the number of performances, and the festival began to receive unprecedented and wide ranging attention within art circles.  The 2nd QianTi Performance Art Festival is a continuation of the inaugural event, and after a year’s discussion and planning it is now time to come together to celebrate its opening.

It’s 2009, the global economic crisis is upon us and the position of China’s surging economy is once again vague and unclear.  Owing to rapid yet stable development some believe that China may be the world’s financial saviour, while others say that China’s underdevelopment may in fact cause even more serious setbacks here than in other countries.  The effects of the economic crisis is nowhere more noticeable than in China’s contemporary art market.  Galleries, both minor and major, have shut their doors, many art organisations have left the scene and artists can do nothing with studios full of work.

The nature of performance art is that it has always existed relatively independent of commerce.  In these troubled economic times, and in this age or materialism, performance art still offers a clear, precise and refreshing artistic voice.  One which has always been virtually incorruptible by market forces.  Our lives are like a game, we toil away mischievously creating our art, our thoughts filled with philosophy, while men spread like plants across the land and the sky.  This indescribable power brings a moment of clarity to an absurd world but shatters it simultaneously.

Much art is born from the strangeness of life itself.  Being a part of a global society we too take politics and world issues into our everyday thoughts, but through reading and interpreting the actions of people from all walks of life and all cultures performance art tries to build a bridge between historical and future thought.  We are there to know the world.  We open the cap, tear off the plastic and hit the play button.  Then we open the window, and with shining eyes, we reach for the heavens with you.

For the artistic community this is a game of revolution and war.  Utilising the simplest of mediums, our own body, performance art directly challenges authority and opposes traditions.  The word “body” alone does not and cannot represent any individual, more importantly it is a vehicle for the continuation of our expression.  With this as a background the 2nd QianTi Performance Art Festival opens without limitations imposed by hidden agendas or commercial interests.  It is a pure and honest offering to the world of contemporary art.

The 2nd QianTi Performance Art Festival will be held at CCD 300 Art Zone in the CaoChangDi art region of Beijing on May 1st, 2009.  Planned by Wang Jun and sponsored by CCD 300 Commercial Group and The Eighth Day Yunnan Restaurant, this festival has steadily grown with the assistance of the planning team and organiser along with the help of art lovers and the artists themselves.  We look forward to a vibrant, multifaceted, interactive festival and we hope the 2nd QianTi Performance Art Festival brings a new and unique experience to the contemporary art stage.
